Bella writes:
"Lineage showcases three centuries of evolution and innovation in writing for solo violin, with six new commissions. I am honored that Dai Wei, Gloria Kravchenko, Nokuthula Ngwenyama, Eunike Tanzil, Joan Tower, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich are writing these new works for me.
I first performed Ysaÿe's Six Sonatas for Solo Violin when I was working with my beloved mentor Jaime Laredo, whose teacher, Josef Gingold, studied with Ysaÿe. Jaime often spoke about how Ysaÿe was deeply inspired by Bach's Sonatas and Partitas, and that influence is reflected in his own sonatas, which are challenging and serious works in their own right. In this spirit, my commissioning project is inspired by the direct lineage I felt to Ysaÿe. Each of these new pieces reflects the rich history of unaccompanied violin writing, the composer’s individual voice, and her personal connection to the instrument—all while adding six important new works to the repertoire."
Most recently, Bella premiered Carousel, by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, in June 2025, at the Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle.
